Gallery Scarabs

There are two species of Gallery Scarab in the British Isles, Saprosites mendax and Saprosites natelensis. They belong to the Subfamily Aphodiinae along with Dweller dung beetles but in a separate Tribe. They are very different from the Dwellers. The body shape is parallel sided, elongate and flattened and the head is somewhat larger. They are found in the burrows of the Lucanidae (Stag Beetles) and in decaying wood. Little is known about the larvae, they are undescribed.
